New Parliament building should be inaugurated by president, not PM: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi today said the new Parliament building should be inaugurated by the President and not by the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the country’s newly constructed parliamentary building on May 28, according to a release issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met Modi last Thursday and invited him to inaugurate the new building.
“The new parliamentary building should be inaugurated by the President and not by the Prime Minister. May 28 is also the birthday of Hindutva ideologue V.D. Savarkar and several opposition parties have criticised the government for inaugurating the new parliamentary building on the same day.
According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the new building can accommodate 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 300 members in the Rajya Sabha comfortably.
If there is a joint sitting of both the Houses, then there is a total seating arrangement of 1280 members in the Lok Sabha Chamber. Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation stone of the new parliament building on December 10, 2020. The present parliament building was built in 1927.
