Court sentences IPS officer in defamation case filed by Dhoni

The Madras High Court today, in a contempt of court case filed by former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, sentenced Tamil Nadu Indian Police Service (IPS) officer to 15 days in jail.
A division bench of Justices S S Sundar and Sunder Mohan suspended the sentence for 30 days to give Sampat Kumar an opportunity to file an appeal against the sentence.
Dhoni had filed a contempt of court case against the IPS officer for allegedly making defamatory statements against him.
Dhoni had filed a defamation case in 2014 for using his name in Indian Premier League (IPL) betting and sought a compensation of Rs 100 crore.  Sampat Kumar’s counter affidavit filed in the case has sought punishment for his remarks against the judiciary.
