Round of meetings underway to elect Kejriwal’s successor
New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced his sudden resignation from the post of Chief Minister, a series of discussions and meetings are underway in the party to choose his successor.
A meeting of AAP’s political affairs committee has also been scheduled for Monday evening.
Earlier in the day, senior party leader and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia arrived at Kejriwal’s official residence here and discussed possible names for the chief minister’s post.
Delhi ministers Atishi, Gopal Rai, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Kailash Gahlot and some MLAs from reserved categories and Delhi Assembly Speaker Rakhi Birla and Kejriwal’s wife Sunita are among the probable candidates for Kejriwal’s successor.
Kejriwal, who was released from jail recently after being granted bail in a Delhi Excise Policy case, had announced while addressing party workers at the party headquarters on Sunday that he would not take over as chief minister till he gets a “mandate of honesty” from the people.
He said he and Sisodia can become chief minister and deputy chief minister only when “people say we are honest”.
