Women’s Commission to seek action against Punjab MP Charanjit Channi
Chandigarh: The Punjab State Women’s Commission is set to write to the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) against MP Charanjit Channi over his alleged derogatory remarks against women. The move comes after Channi failed to respond to two show-cause notices issued by the commission.
Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill confirmed that notices were sent to Channi’s official email ID, but he has yet to appear before the panel. Gill stated that the commission would wait for Channi to present himself before escalating the matter to the DGP.
In response to the controversy, the former Chief Minister apologized during a media interaction at his residence. “If anyone’s sentiments have been hurt, I apologize with folded hands. I have never thought of saying anything against women. Whoever feels hurt, I sincerely apologize,” he said.
The commission had earlier taken suo motu cognizance of a viral video on social media, which allegedly showed Congress candidate Amrita Warring making derogatory remarks against women and two communities during her election campaign. The show-cause notice to Warring was also issued on Monday.
