Indian-origin woman murdered in UK, husband suspected
London: An alleged dowry-related murder in Northamptonshire, UK, has left the community in shock. Police suspect that Harshita Barela, an Indian-origin woman, was killed by her husband, 23-year-old Pankaj Lamba.
According to Harshita’s elder sister, Sonia Barela, Lamba and his family had been demanding dowry despite substantial gifts of gold and money given during the marriage.
Sonia alleged that her sister was murdered for dowry. “Harshita got married to Pankaj on March 22 this year. Despite receiving significant dowry, Pankaj was reportedly dissatisfied and kept demanding more,” she said.
Investigators revealed that Harshita was killed on November 10, and her body was later transported by car from Corby to East London. The car was abandoned at Brisbane Road, Ilford, where her remains were discovered on November 14.
Northamptonshire Police confirmed they are actively searching for Lamba, stating that he is wanted for questioning in connection with the murder.
“We received a call from a police station in Delhi on November 15, informing us that Harshita had been murdered,” Sonia said. She added that both Harshita’s and Lamba’s phones were switched off when the family tried to contact them.
The Barela family believes that Lamba may have informed his family about the crime, citing their apparent concern when confronted. Meanwhile, Northamptonshire Police said their commitment to the ongoing investigation, stating that it began immediately after the body was found.
Further details about the case are awaited as authorities continue their search for Lamba.
