Police intervene to prevent child marriage in Kaithal

Chandigarh: Authorities in Kaithal town, Haryana, intervened to stop the marriage of a 14-year-old girl after receiving a tip-off about the illegal union. The incident occurred in a colony near Chandana Gate, where preparations were underway for the girl’s wedding to a 20-year-old groom.

Before the groom’s baraat could arrive, the Child Marriage Prevention team, led by officer Neelam, arrived at the venue along with police personnel. Acting on information provided by a local resident, the team halted the ceremony and spoke to the groom’s family, effectively preventing the marriage.

The girl, who had reportedly dropped out of school after class 7, was found to be 14-and-a-half years old based on her Aadhaar card details. While a relative claimed the age recorded on the Aadhaar card was incorrect, officials confirmed that the girl was underage.

Authorities informed the family about the legal consequences of child marriage and obtained a written agreement from them, pledging not to marry the girl until she reaches adulthood.
