India alliance mulls resolution to remove Vice President Dhankhar from office
New Delhi: The ‘India’ alliance is reportedly planning to submit a resolution seeking the removal of Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Opposition sources stated on Monday that the notice would be given “very soon,” citing alleged bias by Dhankhar in his role as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Sources revealed that the coalition had contemplated filing the resolution in August but chose to delay the move, opting to give Dhankhar “another chance.” However, his actions during Monday’s proceedings reportedly prompted the alliance to reconsider.
The Congress has taken the lead in drafting the resolution, with support from other ‘India’ bloc parties, including the Trinamool Congress and the Samajwadi Party.
The tensions in the Upper House escalated during Zero Hour on Monday when BJP Leader of the House J P Nadda raised concerns over the alleged ties between the Forum of Democratic Leaders in the Asia-Pacific (FDL-AP) and billionaire George Soros. Nadda claimed a member of the Rajya Sabha is a co-chairman of the forum, adding that the matter demanded attention.
The session was adjourned amid the ongoing standoff, further highlighting the strained relations between the government and the opposition.
