Teacher apologizes for assaulting Sikh student after viral video sparks outrage in Punjab

Chandigarh: A video showing a Sikh student being assaulted by a female teacher at a private school in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur has gone viral, sparking widespread outrage.

The incident occurred in Baddon village, where the teacher slapped the student, Amandeep Singh, multiple times, pulled his hair, and knocked him to the ground during class.

The video, which shows the teacher slapping the student six times on the cheek and twice on the back within 42 seconds, triggered protests on social media.

Many termed the act of pulling the hair of a Sikh child an insult to a religious symbol. The student can be seen crying and apologizing, but the teacher continued the assault.

As the controversy escalated, Punjab’s Education Minister, Harjot Bains, ordered immediate action against the teacher, the school principal, and the school owner.

The matter was eventually resolved through a panchayat meeting involving the student, his grandfather Santokh Singh, and the Baddon village council.

The teacher submitted a written apology, stating, “I had wrongly beaten a student named Amandeep Singh while teaching. I apologize for this and will not make such a mistake in the future.”

The education department has been directed to ensure stricter action and oversight to prevent such incidents in the future.
