Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, advocate for Sikh prisoners, passes away at 91

New Delhi: Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, a prominent figure in the fight for the release of captive Sikhs, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91.

Khalsa began his hunger strike on January 16, 2015, at the age of 82, demanding the release of Sikh prisoners who remained in jails despite completing their sentences.

His hunger strike, which lasted until January 14, 2023, is regarded as one of Punjab’s longest and most significant non-violent protests.

A resident of Hasanpur village on Ferozepur Road in Ludhiana, Khalsa’s relentless struggle for justice has left an indelible mark on the region’s history.
