Amritsar police secure five-day remand of Akashdeep Singh in Ambedkar statue desecration case

Chandigarh: Amritsar police have secured a five-day remand of Akashdeep Singh, accused of desecrating the statue of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar on Heritage Road. The police informed the court that the accused had also burnt a flag in Bathinda, which is yet to be recovered.

According to to Advocate Anil Kumar Cheema, representing the Dalit community, the police are still searching for another flag that Akashdeep allegedly intended to burn in Bathinda.

Preliminary investigations suggest that he was brainwashed in Dubai and sent to Punjab to disrupt communal harmony.

The incident occurred on January 26, when the accused allegedly set fire to the tricolour under Ambedkar’s statue before climbing it with a hammer.

ACP Central Jaspal Singh said that a mobile phone recovered from Akashdeep has been sent for forensic examination to trace his communications. Meanwhile, individuals linked to him are being questioned.

ACP Jaspal Singh declined to disclose further details, citing the ongoing investigation.
