Advocate HS Phoolka seeks death sentence for Sajjan Kumar in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case
New Delhi: Prominent Sikh lawyer Advocate HS Phoolka offered prayers at the Golden Temple as a gesture of gratitude following Congress leader Sajjan Kumar’s conviction in a case related to the November 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Phoolka expressed hope that the court would award the death sentence to the accused.
Speaking to the media at Sri Harmandir Sahib, Phoolka highlighted the long wait for justice, noting that it took four decades to reopen the case, which was previously closed by Delhi Police.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT), reconstituted under the NDA government, revisited the Sikh genocide cases, including the one against Sajjan Kumar, who is accused of killing two Sikhs, Jaswant Singh and Taranjit Singh.
The case was reopened based on the testimony of Jaswant Singh’s wife, leading to Kumar’s conviction. He is scheduled to be sentenced on February 18. Phoolka noted that Kumar is already imprisoned in another case and is also facing trial in another.
Phoolka further said that a case against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, accused of killing three Sikhs, is still pending in court.
He pointed out that, according to government data, 2,733 Sikhs were killed in Delhi during the 1984 riots, yet only a few accused have been convicted, leaving many victims without justice.
