Punjabi youth deported from US returns empty-handed; Family left in ruins

Chandigarh: The parents of Punjabi youths deported by the US are struggling to cope with their grief, as the crackdown on illegal immigrants has devastated many families. Among them is Jaswinder Singh from Pandori Araia village, who returned home empty-handed despite spending lakhs of rupees.

Jaswinder’s father, Sukhdev Singh, broke down in tears, revealing that he sold ancestral land and mortgaged their house to fund his son’s journey to America.

Now, they are left with no home and mounting debts. Jaswinder, who has three brothers and two sisters, had gone to the US on December 24, hoping for a better future.

He recounted his ordeal of crossing the Mexico border on January 27 with 20 others. They traveled by boat, navigated canals, and walked through forests for days.

Jaswinder said they were held in a camp where they were exposed to cold winds and stripped of their clothing before being deported.
