Why Sajjan Kumar not awarded to death sentence in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, know here

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment for the murder of two Sikhs in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Kumar was convicted on February 12 by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court.

Following the sentencing, advocate H.S. Phoolka stated that Kumar received a double life sentence—one for the killings and another for the burning and looting of 436 houses.

The court, however, did not grant the death penalty, citing mitigating circumstances. “Factors such as age, mental health, history of abuse, or lack of a criminal record can reduce the severity of punishment.

Sajjan Kumar is 80 years old and suffers from multiple ailments. According to the jail report, he cannot take care of himself and requires assistance even for basic needs,” the judgment noted.

The court said that legal provisions prevent the death penalty for individuals over 80 with serious health conditions, but Kumar received the maximum possible sentence under the circumstances.
