Supreme Court adjourns hearing on farmers’ demands, awaits March 19 talks

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned the hearing on petitions related to the ongoing farmers’ protests, considering the ongoing dialogue between the Centre and the protesting farmers. The next round of talks is scheduled for March 19.

A bench led by Chief Justice S.S. Koteshwar Singh, along with Justices Surya Kant and N.A., stated that the court would take up the matter after March 19.

The bench is also set to hear petitions seeking contempt action against Punjab government officials for providing medical assistance to farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal.

The court acknowledged the efforts of the Supreme Court-appointed high-powered committee, which was established to address the grievances of the protesting farmers.

It also took note of the committee’s interim report while setting the honorarium for its chairman, Justice (retd) Nawab Singh, and other members.

In September 2024, the Supreme Court formed the committee to mediate between the government and farmers. The protests, led by Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been ongoing at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13 last year.

Farmers marching toward Delhi to press for their demands were stopped by security forces at the Khanauri border.
