SC allows Ranveer Allahabadia to continue his show, warns against offensive content
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted relief to Ranveer Allahabadia in the India’s Got Latent case, allowing him to continue hosting the show.
The court is currently hearing an application filed by Allahabad, which sought a modification of an earlier order that barred him and his team from performing until further notice.
Allahabadia argued that the order affected the livelihoods of 280 employees and noted that his platform also involves celebrity interviews.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court remarked on the nature of comedy and the importance of maintaining decency in public performances.
“There is a 75-year-old comedian who performs in a way that the whole family can watch. That is talent. Using filthy language is not genius,” the court stated. It acknowledged the presence of comedians who criticize the government while maintaining decorum and emphasized that freedom of speech does not grant unrestricted rights to say anything.
The court also addressed broader concerns about social media content, urging the Centre to draft rules that balance morality and liberty. It called for stakeholder consultations, including input from the media, on regulating online content.
“Humour is something the entire family can enjoy… Talent doesn’t rely on abusive language,” the Supreme Court observed.
