Tensions rise over removal of Bhindranwale flags on Punjab-Himachal border
Chandigarh: The removal of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s flags from two-wheelers traveling from Punjab to Himachal Pradesh has sparked protests in Punjab. Sikh youths have expressed anger over alleged harassment by miscreants in the presence of Himachal Police.
The first incident was reported in Hoshiarpur, where Sikh youths stopped Himachal Roadways buses and pasted posters of Bhindranwale on them.
They also warned drivers and conductors against removing the posters. Videos of the incident show slogans of “Khalistan Zindabad” being raised at the main bus stand, where police were present.
The protestors, led by Dal Khalsa’s district chief Baljinder Singh, claimed that certain elements in Himachal did not want posters of Bhindranwale in their state. In response, they announced that any vehicle entering Punjab from Himachal should display Bhindranwale’s photo to be allowed entry.
The situation has heightened tensions, with Sikh youths asserting that they are not against any community but will respond to any challenge.
