Narayan Chaura who fired at Sukhbir Singh Badal granted bail, to be released today

Chandigarh: Narayan Singh Chaura, who opened fire at Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, will be released from jail today after being granted bail by a court. He has been in Ropar jail for 110 days since the incident.

Advocate Baljinder Singh said that the Additional Sessions Judge’s court granted bail to Chaura, who has been in custody for nearly four months. On December 3, 2024, he attempted to shoot Badal inside the Golden Temple complex.

At the time of the attack, Badal was performing seva at the Golden Temple after being declared Tankhaiya (guilty of religious misconduct) by the Akal Takht in August.

The religious authority had imposed a tankha (religious penalty) on him for “mistakes” and “certain decisions” made by the Akali Dal-led government between 2007 and 2017. As part of the penalty, Badal sat at the entrance of the shrine with a placard around his neck.

Chaura’s wife, Jasmeet Kaur, had condemned his actions.
