India, US to hold another round of trade talks in May

New Delhi: India and the United States are set to hold another round of bilateral trade talks in May, while virtual meetings between the two sides are expected to begin this week, Additional Secretary in the Commerce Ministry Rajesh Agarwal said on Tuesday.

Agarwal is leading the Indian negotiation team that engaged in four-day talks with US officials from March 26 to 29. The meeting came amid tensions following US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose retaliatory tariffs on Indian exports. However, on April 3, Trump suspended the proposed tariffs on India and several other countries for 90 days.

Speaking at a Commerce Ministry briefing on trade data in New Delhi, Agarwal said the terms of the talks on the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) have been settled.

He added that virtual consultations will begin within the week, and in-person talks are likely to take place in the second half of May.
