Man posing as gangster Goldy Brar’s brother arrested for extortion attempt in Mohali
Chandigarh: The Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Punjab Police has arrested a man from Mohali for allegedly trying to extort Rs 1 crore from a local automobile showroom owner by posing as the brother of Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar. The accused has been identified as Lovejit Singh, a resident of Bargari in Faridkot district.
According to police, Lovejit threatened to kill the complainant and his family if the ransom demand was not met. A case has been registered against him at Sohana police station under relevant sections of the law.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused used virtual numbers and social media platforms to conceal his identity and make ransom calls in a bid to evade police action.
The DGP warned people against falling prey to such fake extortion attempts, stating that many criminals with no links to known gangs are using the names of gangsters to spread fear and extort money.
He urged the public to report any such ransom calls immediately so that appropriate legal action can be taken.
