Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal returns security cover, urges deployment for public safety

Chandigarh: Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has decided to surrender his official security cover, urging the Punjab Police to deploy the personnel for public safety instead.

In a letter to Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), Seechewal requested that the security personnel assigned to him be withdrawn with immediate effect.

The move comes at a time when many political leaders seek enhanced security cover, making Seechewal’s decision an unusual one.

In his letter, the Rajya Sabha MP also expressed concern over the law and order situation in Punjab, citing an increase in incidents of robbery and snatching in the Lohian area of Jalandhar district and along the banks of the Holy Kali Bein in Sultanpur Lodhi.

Seechewal currently has six security personnel assigned to him. He noted that he had initially declined security cover but was provided it nonetheless.

“We do not face any threat, yet security was provided to us. Ordinary citizens need protection more than we do,” Seechewal wrote in his letter.

He suggested that three of the security personnel be deployed at Lohian Khas police station and the remaining three at Sultanpur Lodhi police station, saying their services would be more useful in strengthening policing and ensuring the safety of the public.
