Chandigarh: Punjab Police on Monday clarified that Aadhaar cards will continue to be accepted as valid proof of identity and address at all Saanjh Kendras across the state.
In a statement, Special Director General of Police (Community Affairs Division) Gurpreet Kaur Deo said the Punjab Police had not issued any instructions to the contrary and dismissed reports suggesting otherwise.
She said Aadhaar remains a valid document for identity and address verification at all Saanjh Kendras. Deo further added that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had, in March this year, authorised Punjab Police to carry out voluntary Aadhaar authentication for citizens availing police services.
The clarification comes amid confusion over the acceptance of Aadhaar for police-related services, with Punjab Police reiterating that the document continues to be recognised for verification purposes at all Saanjh Kendras across the state.
