Washington: Two people in the US state of Michigan have died after contracting cyclosporiasis linked to iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants, marking the first recorded deaths from the parasitic illness in the United States.
Michigan health officials confirmed the deaths on Monday. According to experts, both individuals had underlying medical conditions, and the infection, combined with severe dehydration, is believed to have worsened their health.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite. It commonly leads to prolonged diarrhoea, stomach cramps and dehydration. While the disease is generally not life-threatening, it can become serious for elderly people, immunocompromised patients and those with existing health conditions.
An investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that the outbreak has spread across nine states and is linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms in central Mexico. However, authorities are continuing to investigate whether other sources may also be involved.
Health officials said the number of cyclosporiasis cases in the US has reached a record high this year. The contaminated lettuce was recalled after being identified in food products sold at Yum Brands-owned Taco Bell restaurants.
The outbreak has also affected consumer confidence. As investigations continue and new infections are reported, sales of salad products have declined, while restaurant chains such as Sweetgreen and Chipotle have also reported a drop in customer footfall.
Health experts advise consumers to practise proper food hygiene, although washing vegetables alone may not completely eliminate the Cyclospora parasite. Authorities continue to monitor the outbreak and trace additional sources of contamination.
