Chandigarh: The Akali Dal Waris Punjab De appears to be intensifying its political activities across Punjab’s Malwa region ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with the party focusing particularly on strengthening its organisational base in the region.
Large gatherings at party meetings across various Assembly constituencies, along with the reported entry of leaders from other political outfits, have added to the growing political activity in Malwa. The organisation is also witnessing increased enthusiasm among young supporters.
Focus on 69 Malwa seats
Malwa comprises 69 of Punjab’s 117 Assembly constituencies, making it the state’s largest and politically crucial region. The region includes major districts such as Moga, Faridkot, Muktsar, Bathinda, parts of Ludhiana, Sangrur, Barnala, Mansa, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib and Ferozepur.
The region has traditionally been an important base for Akali politics, with Panthic issues also playing a significant role in its electoral landscape.
The incidents at Behbal Kalan and Bargari had a major impact on the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal)’s standing in the region, while the Aam Aadmi Party subsequently received significant support from Malwa in the 2022 Assembly elections.
Panthic politics shows signs of revival
Political activity in Malwa is once again showing signs of a shift towards Panthic politics, with some observers beginning to view Waris Punjab De as a potential alternative.
At a recent meeting organised by the party in Baghapurana, which reportedly turned into a large gathering, several prominent faces associated with the Badal-led Akali Dal and its revivalist faction joined Waris Punjab De.
While it may be too early to assess the electoral impact of these developments, senior leaders associated with the party—including MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali, MP Bhai Sarabjit Singh Khalsa and Bapu Tarsem Singh, father of Bhai Amritpal Singh—have been actively involved in the organisation’s activities in Malwa.
Their sustained outreach indicates that Waris Punjab De is seeking to establish a stronger presence in the region and position itself for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.
