Surrey: Sandy Dosanjh, wife of suspended Vancouver police officer Kalwinder Singh alias Kal Dosanjh, has withdrawn from the upcoming City of Surrey elections after her party cancelled her candidacy.
Dosanjh, 50, was arrested by Canadian police along with an associate on allegations including fraud, theft and breach of trust. Sandy had been campaigning for around a month as a candidate for the Council Conservative Party before the party announced that her candidacy had been withdrawn.
Sandy has maintained that her husband is innocent and expressed confidence that he would be cleared by the court.
She also accused Vancouver Police of entering her home without prior notice and conducting a search. She alleged that officers took several documents from the house without her consent.
Police allege $3 million fraud
Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai said a two-and-a-half-year investigation had uncovered evidence involving 19 people and around C$3 million in alleged fraud. Police have reportedly laid nine charges against Kal Dosanjh and eight against his alleged associate.
Rai said numerous people had approached police with complaints alleging that Dosanjh had withheld their money, although many complainants were unable to provide evidence regarding the source of the funds.
Dosanjh has denied the allegations through his lawyer, while the case is now before the courts.
