Chandigarh: The Punjab Police has rejected reports circulating on social media claiming that police headquarters had issued an advisory directing personnel not to wear uniforms while travelling to and from duty.
In a post on X, the Punjab Police clarified that neither the police headquarters nor any office under it had issued such instructions. The department said police personnel had not been directed to avoid uniforms while travelling or to wear civilian clothes while commuting to and from duty.
The police appealed to the public and its personnel not to believe such rumours and to rely only on official sources for information.
The clarification came after an audio clip went viral following the killing of an ASI in Amritsar. The audio purportedly advised police personnel not to wear uniforms or any clothing identifying them as police officers while travelling to and from duty, reportedly as a precaution against possible attacks.
The audio, featuring a woman’s voice, also allegedly asked police personnel to make an entry about the instructions in the daily diary and inform others about them.
The clip created confusion among members of the public and within the police force. A Congress leader also shared the audio clip, adding a political dimension to the controversy.
Following the circulation of the audio, the Punjab Police issued a fact-check clarification, categorically describing the purported advisory as false.
