Caller name display service to roll out across India from November 1

New Delhi: Mobile phone users in India may soon see both the caller’s name and phone number on their screens when receiving calls, with the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service scheduled to be introduced from November 1, 2026, according to the information provided.

Under the proposed system, if an incoming number is not saved in a user’s contacts, the name registered by the caller when obtaining the SIM card will be displayed alongside the number. The service is expected to help users identify unknown callers and potentially reduce the risk of phone-based fraud.

The Department of Telecommunications has reportedly directed telecom operators to begin offering the service from November 1.

Users will not need to activate CNAP separately, according to the information provided.

The service is intended to provide an additional layer of caller identification. However, displaying a registered name does not by itself guarantee that a call is genuine or safe.
