Five killed in Guwahati hotel shooting over alleged lease dispute

Guwahati: Five people were killed and another injured in a shooting at a hotel in Guwahati, Assam, on Monday night following an alleged dispute between the hotel owner and the contractor who had leased the property, police said. The accused was arrested within an hour of the incident.

The shooting took place at around 9 pm at Hotel Bilas Inn, located on the main GS Road opposite Bora Service. The hotel is around 2 km from the Assam Police headquarters.

Guwahati police commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta said six people were shot during the incident. Five succumbed to their injuries, while the sixth is undergoing treatment.

Police said the accused, who had leased the hotel, allegedly opened fire during the dispute. A licensed .32-bore pistol believed to have been used in the shooting has been recovered. Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident may have stemmed from a property dispute linked to the hotel’s lease agreement.

According to the police commissioner, all five victims were associated with the hotel owner. The accused is in custody and being questioned as investigators probe the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the background to the dispute.

Videos that emerged after the incident reportedly showed bodies near the hotel reception and on the road outside. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
