Habeas corpus: Hearing on Amritpal Singh’s ‘illegal arrest’ and all other petitions adjourned

Chandigarh: The legal advisor of ‘Waris Punjab De’ has filed an application in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the ‘illegal arrest’ of Amritpal Singh, seeking to make the Central government a party in the case. The high court questioned the petition and said that there was no need to make the central government a party in this petition. The court said that a copy of the petition filed was not even given to the Punjab government.

Raising another question, the high court said, “Today the high court was supposed to give information from your side as to where Amritpal Singh is, but instead of giving this information, you are applying to the central government to be made a party.” After which more time was sought from the petitioner’s side. The court, while giving time, now ordered the hearing of this petition on April 24 along with other petitions and adjourned today’s hearing.
NSA is one of the most stringent laws in the country which has been imposed on Amritpal and several of his associates. Under the NSA Act, if the Central or any state government feels that a person is a threat to peace and security of the country or the state, then he can be arrested under the section of this law and kept in custody for 12 months.
