Chandigarh: Tension prevailed outside a Mohali court on Wednesday as former Punjab minister and senior Akali leader Bikram Majithia, arrested in a disproportionate assets case, was produced before the court.

Shiromani Akali Dal president and former chief minister Sukhbir Badal reached Mohali with his supporters to protest against Majithia’s arrest.

As they moved towards the court, police surrounded and took them into custody, citing security concerns. This led to a heated exchange between Badal and Punjab Police officials, triggering anger among Akali workers.

Meanwhile, police detained Akali leaders in different districts of Punjab to prevent them from gathering in Mohali. A large number of police personnel and fire brigade units were deployed around the Mohali court as the situation grew tense.

Majithia was arrested from his residence in Amritsar and is accused of possessing assets worth Rs 540 crore, allegedly disproportionate to his income.

Vigilance officials, who had earlier secured a seven-day remand, produced him in court again on Monday, stating that Majithia was not cooperating with the investigation and sought an extension of his remand.
