Chandigarh: A two-day special session of the Punjab Assembly began on Wednesday but the first day’s proceedings lasted only 11 minutes before the House was adjourned till 10 am on July 11.
Tributes were paid to Tarn Taran MLA Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal, former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, writer Dr Ratan Singh Jaggi, martyr Naik Surinder Singh, Baljit Singh, those killed in the Ahmedabad plane crash, and Sanjay Verma, a cloth trader from Abohar.
The session has been called to introduce strict laws related to sacrilege. However, speaking to the media outside the assembly, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said the opposition had not yet received a copy of the bill that the government plans to table on Thursday.
“If the government was serious about the matter, it would have given us a copy of the bill a day or two in advance for study,” Bajwa said.
He also said the opposition had requested the Speaker to extend the session, suggesting one day be dedicated to discussing law and order and the other to land pooling.
“Our identity was ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’. Modi has disposed of the identity of the soldiers, and now farmers have to settle the tax,” Bajwa added.
