Sangrur: A 10-year-old Dalit boy was allegedly thrashed by a couple in Balad Khurd village of Bhawanigarh block in Punjab’s Sangrur district for plucking guavas from a tree. The incident took place on the evening of July 21.

According to the victim’s family, Gurjot Singh, son of Gurpreet Singh, was picking guavas from branches hanging over a wall when Jaswinder Singh and his wife—both from the Jat community—allegedly beat him with slippers and slapped him repeatedly.

The child’s mother, Geeta Devi, claimed that when she took her son to Jaswinder Singh’s house to confront them, the couple verbally abused her and hurled casteist slurs.

The child’s father said he too visited the accused’s house later in the evening, but was allegedly treated with the same hostility.

The family has demanded strict action against the couple, calling the attack not only inhumane but also caste-based. Police have not issued an official statement yet.
