Birmingham: British police have arrested a man in connection with the alleged rape of a Sikh woman in Oldbury. The woman, believed to be in her 20s, was reportedly raped by two white men in the Tame Road area on September 9.
West Midlands Police said a man in his 30s was arrested on Sunday evening on suspicion of rape and is currently in custody. The force confirmed it was first alerted to the incident on Tuesday morning and added that those involved in the crime have been detained.
Sandwell Police Chief Superintendent Kim Madill called the arrest an “important step forward” in the investigation. He thanked the local community for its support and urged people not to speculate while inquiries continue.
On Sunday, members of the Sikh community held a peaceful protest outside the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick. Dozens gathered to pray for the victim before marching to the site of the alleged attack. Local councillor Parbinder Kaur also attended, telling Sky News she joined the event “as a woman, a mother and a grandmother.”
