Canada PM apologizes to Trump after controversial ad, trade talks stalled

Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had requested Ontario’s premier not to run advertisements that could offend US President Donald Trump.

The controversy stems from a 1987 ad circulated in Canada showing former US President Ronald Reagan claiming that taxes lead to job losses and could trigger a trade war.

Carney confirmed that he had personally apologized to Trump during a dinner at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit. Following the airing of the ad, Trump halted trade talks with Canada and imposed an additional 10 per cent tariff on Canadian goods.

The announcement came at a news conference marking the end of Carney’s nine-day tour of Asia. A day earlier, President Trump had stated that the US and Canada would not resume trade discussions.
