Indian PhD student shot dead near University of Toronto campus

Toronto: A 20-year-old Indian PhD student was shot dead near the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto and Canadian authorities are investigating the incident as a homicide.

The shooting took place on Tuesday and Toronto police identified the victim as Shivank Awasthi on Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

Duty Inspector Jeff Ellington said police received a call about an injured man lying on the ground near Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road at around 3.30 pm on Tuesday. When officers reached the spot, they found a man with a gunshot wound who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the suspect fled the area before officers arrived and no arrest has been made so far.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of the student. In a post on X, the Consulate said it is in touch with the bereaved family and is providing all possible assistance in coordination with local authorities.
