Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh): At least 20 people were killed in a massive explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Vetlapalem village of Kakinada district on Saturday, officials said. The toll is feared to rise as several injured persons are undergoing treatment in hospitals.
State Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha confirmed the incident and said rescue operations were underway. Several workers were present inside the unit at the time of the blast.
CM expresses grief
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a social media post, he said he was anguished by the loss of precious lives and directed officials to extend immediate assistance to the victims and their families.
He also asked senior officials and ministers to visit the spot and oversee relief and rescue measures.
According to preliminary information, around 20 workers were inside the factory when the explosion occurred. The administration is monitoring rescue efforts and has assured all possible support to the affected families.
