Faith over crisis: Golden Temple langar runs uninterrupted despite LPG shortage

Amritsar: Despite the LPG shortage reported in parts of Punjab amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the world’s largest community kitchen — the ‘Guru Ka Langar’ at Golden Temple — continues to serve food to nearly one lakh devotees every day without disruption.

Officials of the shrine’s management body, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, said the langar kitchen requires around 25 LPG cylinders daily to operate its massive cooking system.

According to a spokesperson, a fresh supply of about 100 LPG cylinders is expected on Friday, while the management has also kept more than 500 quintals of firewood in reserve to handle any emergency situation.

Senior functionary Bhagwant Singh Dangar said the shrine’s kitchen consumes around 25 LPG cylinders along with nearly 1,200 units of piped gas every day to prepare meals for devotees visiting the shrine.

In addition to feeding around one lakh visitors daily, the langar kitchen also prepares nearly 36 quintals of karah parsad (sacred pudding) every day.

Officials said that even if gas supplies are disrupted due to the crisis, the kitchen is fully prepared to switch to traditional cooking methods using firewood to ensure that langar service continues uninterrupted for devotees.
