Punjab Police ASI shot dead by bike-borne attackers near Majitha

Chandigarh: A Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was shot dead by unidentified attackers in Amritsar on Sunday morning while he was on his way to duty.

The deceased officer has been identified as Joga Singh, who was posted in the traffic wing and belonged to village Ghaniye Ke Bangar in Gurdaspur district.

According to initial information, ASI Joga Singh had left his home around 6 am on his scooter for duty in Amritsar. When he reached nearly one kilometre before Majitha, two unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle intercepted him on the road and opened fire.

The attackers allegedly fired two bullets at the ASI — one hitting the left side of his chest and the other striking his waist.

Joga Singh sustained critical injuries in the attack. As the incident occurred early in the morning, no immediate help reached him and he succumbed to his injuries at the spot.

Police teams rushed to the area after receiving information about the incident and have launched an investigation to identify and trace the attackers. Security agencies are also examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and possible motives behind the targeted killing.
