Tamil Nadu exporters halt production after US imposes 50% duty

Tiruppur: Several apparel manufacturers in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, exporting to the US have halted production, while many others are assessing their options, industry representatives said on Saturday. They added that execution of orders has also been put on hold following instructions from US buyers.

The move comes after the US imposed a 50 per cent duty on Indian textile and apparel exports, pushing exporters into a ‘wait and see’ mode. Industry players said they are refraining from major decisions until there is more clarity on the trade situation.

Following the signing of a free trade agreement between India and the UK, exporters are now turning their focus to the UK market. Known as the country’s ‘knitwear hub,’ Tiruppur exports garments worth around ₹45,000 crore annually, of which ₹12,000 crore — about 30 per cent — goes to the US.

Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) president K.M. said, “Total exports from the Tiruppur region are around ₹45,000 crore, of which 30 per cent (₹12,000 crore) goes to the US market. We expect that 50 per cent of this turnover — about ₹6,000 crore — will be impacted.”
