Chandigarh: Punjab Police has issued a Lookout Circular (LOC) against senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with the alleged attack on Majitha police station.

The development comes amid an ongoing investigation into the incident, which reportedly involved vandalism at the police station and an alleged attempt to forcibly secure the release of a detainee from police custody.

While senior police officials have not issued an official statement regarding the LOC, confirmation of the action was shared through the official social media handle of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on platform X.

The case stems from events that unfolded at Majitha police station, where police have alleged that a group of protesters entered the premises, disrupted official proceedings and attempted to interfere in the custody of an accused person. Following the incident, multiple FIRs were registered and special investigation teams were constituted to identify and arrest those involved.

The issuance of the lookout circular is expected to intensify legal and political tensions surrounding the case, with the Shiromani Akali Dal maintaining that the action against its senior leader is politically motivated.

Further details from Punjab Police regarding the scope and duration of the LOC are awaited.

Chandigarh: Days after former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh publicly criticised the appointment of Kewal Singh Dhillon as Punjab BJP president, his daughter Jai Inder Kaur on Monday met the newly appointed state chief in Chandigarh and extended her support.

Jai Inder Kaur, accompanied by BJP leaders and workers from Patiala, visited Dhillon at his residence and congratulated him on being entrusted with the responsibility of leading the party in Punjab.

During the meeting, Jai Inder Kaur wished Dhillon success in his new role and expressed confidence in his ability to further strengthen the BJP organisation in the state. She also conveyed her best wishes for the party’s future under his leadership.

The meeting assumes political significance as Captain Amarinder Singh had recently questioned Dhillon’s appointment and expressed reservations about the decision. His remarks had triggered speculation about possible differences within the Punjab BJP leadership.

However, Jai Inder Kaur’s visit is being viewed as an effort to project unity within the party and support for the new state leadership at a time when the BJP is preparing to expand its base ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

Party leaders described the meeting as cordial and focused on strengthening the organisation and enhancing coordination among workers across the state.

Ludhiana (June 1): Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring today asserted that the party was completely united and was set to return to power in the state in the ensuing assembly elections.

Warring, who is also the Lok Sabha MP from Ludhiana, met his colleague and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who is also the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture and is leading a delegation to the PAU.

Warring, accompanied by senior local leaders, received Channi in the PAU campus. He said, besides being the Chairman of the Standing Committee, Channi is a senior party leader and a former Chief Minister of the state.

He asserted and reaffirmed that the entire leadership including him Partap Singh Bajwa, Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and others are together and will ensure Congress victory in Punjab in 2027.

The PCC president submitted a detailed memorandum to Channi demanding a special one time grant of Rs 1000 crore for research to the PAU, besides a recurring annual grant of Rs 50 to Rs 60 crore.

He said the PAU had been starved of funds and at times it did not have enough money to pay salaries to the employees and scientists. He said the PAU had an important role in ensuring food security in the country as the Green Revolution was scripted in this university only.

Replying to a question about the Aam Aadmi Party’s claims over winning the Municipal Council elections, Warring said, for the last twenty years it has been the ruling party, which has always won these elections and subsequently lost the assembly elections.

He said, in fact, the AAP performance has been poor as compared to that of the ruling parties earlier. He said, the opposition performance has been far better under the AAP regime.
Replying to another question he said the AAP had completely failed on law and order, drugs, employment and finances having turned the state bankrupt. He said killings of innocent people had become a new norm under the AAP regime. “The AAP government is neck deep in corruption and every Punjabi is feeling the pinch”, he remarked.

On union minister of state in railways Ravneet Singh Bittu’s scuffle with the cops and his subsequent apology, Warring described him as “dim-wit”. He said, Bittu instead of fighting with the cops should tell the people of Punjab what he has done for the state while being a minister for two years. “Has he provided any jobs to youth or laid down any additional rail lines in Punjab?” he asked.

Asked to comment about former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s remarks that the Congress, unlike the BJP, took everyone into confidence, he asked, why did he (Amarinder) need to leave the party? He said, he must have realized how much liberal the Congress was and how suffocating the BJP is.
On Ludhiana Shahi Imam questioning his absence from Eid congregation, Warring said, he (Shahi Imam) should not politicise the issue. He said he has been regularly visiting the mosque and the Imam but was busy on the day of Eid.

He was accompanied by senior party leaders including Jassi Khangura, Surinder Dawer, Kuldeep Singh Vaid, Pawan Dewan, Sanjay Talwar and others.

Bhagwant Mann Govt Pays ₹695.36 Crore to Farmers During 2025-26 Crushing Season

Record procurement of 167.20 lakh quintals of sugarcane; farmers hail CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s decision to clear all pending payments

Punjab E News (June 1): Under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab has achieved a major milestone in strengthening the agricultural and cooperative sectors, with the Punjab Government clearing 100% dues of sugarcane farmers during the 2025-26 crushing season. Sugar mills across the state procured a record 167.20 lakh quintals of sugarcane and released payments worth ₹695.36 crore, ensuring that farmers received their dues in full.

The achievement reflects the CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s continued commitment to farmer welfare, crop diversification and rural prosperity. By encouraging farmers to move beyond the traditional wheat-paddy cycle and adopt sugarcane cultivation, the government has created new opportunities for agricultural growth while strengthening the rural economy.

Sugarcane cultivation and sugar mills play a vital role in generating employment and supporting thousands of farming families. To further encourage cultivation, cooperative sugar mills have undertaken several farmer-centric initiatives, including the supply of quality seed, subsidised agricultural machinery, fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides, soil-testing facilities, awareness camps and training programmes. These efforts have contributed to higher productivity and growing farmer confidence in sugarcane cultivation.

The Bhagwant Mann Government has also prioritised timely payments to farmers. During the 2025-26 crushing season, all payments for procured sugarcane were released, providing substantial financial relief to growers and reinforcing their faith in the government’s agricultural policies.

Bhagwant Mann Govt’s Direct Transfer of Dues Has Renewed Farmers’ Faith in Sugarcane Cultivation: Pal Singh

Pal Singh, Sarpanch of village Huthian and a farmer associated with Batala Sugar Mill, welcomed the government’s decision and said, “I have been cultivating sugarcane for the last 30 years and currently have 20 acres under sugarcane cultivation. We are associated with Batala Sugar Mill, and the mill under the CM Bhagwant Singh Mann Government has ensured that payments have reached farmers’ accounts. Some farmers received ₹20 lakh, some ₹10 lakh and others ₹15 lakh directly into their accounts.”

He added, “The payments deposited into our accounts have greatly increased farmers’ enthusiasm. Earlier, payments used to arrive in smaller instalments over time. Now farmers have received their dues directly in their accounts, which has encouraged many of us to move beyond wheat and paddy and expand sugarcane cultivation.”

Bhagwant Mann Govt’s Timely Payments Have Brought Relief & Encouraged More Farmers to Join Sugarcane Cultivation: Lakhbir Singh

Lakhbir Singh of village Alowal, who has been associated with the mill since its inception, said, “Ever since CM Bhagwant Singh Mann came to power, payments have improved considerably. The decision to release the entire payment has brought immense happiness to farmers associated with the Batala mill. Landowners received their dues and are extremely satisfied.”

He added, “If sugarcane payments continue to be made in this manner, farmers will be highly motivated to cultivate more sugarcane and remain associated with the mills. The mill has brought tremendous relief and strengthened the confidence of farmers.”

Appreciating the contribution of the mill staff, Lakhbir Singh said, “The officers and employees of the mill have worked with great dedication and helped make it one of the best-performing mills. Their efforts have played a major role in achieving these results.”

Praising the Chief Minister’s initiative, he added, “CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has provided tremendous relief to farmers by ensuring that payments reach them directly and on time. This has strengthened farmers’ trust and encouraged them to continue cultivating sugarcane.”

Chandigarh: The Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, on Monday approved amendments to the Election Department Service Rules to strengthen the state’s election machinery ahead of the next Punjab Assembly elections.

The decision is aimed at removing long-pending administrative bottlenecks, ensuring the smooth conduct of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and filling key vacancies required for election-related work.

The approval was granted during a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister in Chandigarh. As part of the amendment, the minimum service experience required for promotion from Election Kanungo to Election Tehsildar has been reduced from 15 years to 12 years.

The government said the change was necessitated due to seven vacant posts of Election Tehsildar in the department. Filling these positions has become crucial in view of the ongoing revision of voter lists and preparations for future elections.

Officials said the move would help ensure adequate staffing for election-related responsibilities and improve the efficiency of the department’s functioning.

The Cabinet also approved the Annual Administrative Report of the Department of Water Resources for the year 2025-26.

According to the government, the amendment will facilitate timely promotions, strengthen administrative capacity and support the smooth execution of electoral processes across the state.

Amritsar: Rural Police on Monday intensified its crackdown in connection with the alleged attack, vandalism and attempt to free a detainee from Majitha police station by conducting a raid at the residence of senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia.

A police team led by SP Aditya Warrier reached Majithia’s residence in the Green Avenue area of Amritsar. However, the SAD leader was not present at the house during the operation. Police officials said raids are being carried out at multiple locations in an effort to trace and arrest those named in the case.

Addressing the media, Amritsar Rural SSP Sohail Qasim Mir said the action was linked to an incident that took place at Majitha police station on Sunday. He stated that Jobanpreet Singh had been arrested in connection with FIR No. 90 registered at the police station.

According to the SSP, around 11:30 am on Sunday, Bikram Singh Majithia, along with members of a farmers’ organisation, gathered outside the police station. He alleged that a group of protesters unlawfully entered the police station premises and began searching different rooms.

The police officer claimed that the group reached the room where Jobanpreet Singh was being questioned and allegedly attempted to interfere in the investigation process. Police have accused those involved of attacking the police station, damaging property and trying to secure the release of the detainee from custody.

Officials said special teams have been constituted to identify all those involved in the incident. CCTV footage and other evidence are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

The case has triggered a political controversy, with the Shiromani Akali Dal maintaining that the police action is politically motivated, while authorities insist that legal action is being taken based on the events that unfolded at the police station.

Chandigarh: A team of Amritsar Rural Police on Monday conducted a raid at the Green Avenue residence of senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with a case involving an alleged attack on Majitha police station and an attempt to forcibly free a detainee from police custody.

A large contingent of police personnel reached Majithia’s residence as part of efforts to arrest him in the case. However, police officials said the former minister was not present at the house at the time of the raid.

Police confirmed that an FIR had been registered in connection with Sunday’s incident at Majitha police station. Officials said further details regarding the case would be shared by Amritsar Rural SSP Sohail Qasim Mir.

As part of the investigation, Punjab Police has constituted 12 special teams to identify and arrest those allegedly involved in the incident. Raids are being conducted at multiple locations, while investigators are examining CCTV footage and other evidence collected from the scene.

The controversy stems from an incident on Sunday when members of the Kirti Kisan Union staged a protest outside Majitha police station following the arrest of Jobanjit Singh. Majithia later joined the demonstration along with his supporters and alleged that the arrest was politically motivated, claiming Jobanjit had recently served as a polling agent for the Shiromani Akali Dal during municipal elections.

Police, however, alleged that a section of the crowd attempted to storm the police station and tried to forcibly secure the release of a person in custody.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and police teams have been deployed across various locations to identify all those involved in the incident.

Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Sunday expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would secure a “one-sided” victory in the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and newly appointed Punjab BJP president Keval Singh Dhillon.

Speaking during a visit to Mata Bhadrakali Temple in Kapurthala, Saini congratulated Dhillon on his appointment as the party’s Punjab chief and praised his leadership abilities.

Responding to objections raised by former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh over Dhillon’s appointment, Saini said the BJP’s state leadership was united and that Dhillon enjoyed the goodwill and blessings of senior leaders, including Capt Amarinder Singh.

Asked about the party’s prospects in Punjab following the recent local body elections, Saini asserted that the BJP would contest the next Assembly elections independently.

“BJP will fight the Punjab elections on its own. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party will register a one-sided victory. The people of Punjab have made up their minds in favour of the BJP,” he said.

Saini added that welfare schemes and development initiatives being implemented in Haryana under the BJP government could also be extended to Punjab in the future.

Praising the new state president, Saini said, “Keval Singh Dhillon is a very capable person. Under his leadership, the BJP will strengthen its presence across Punjab. The party has entrusted him with a major responsibility, and I wholeheartedly welcome his appointment.”

On speculation that leaders from other political parties were in touch with the BJP, Saini said the party’s focus remained on connecting with the people of Punjab rather than pursuing political defections.

Commenting on the issue of extortion and law-and-order concerns in Punjab, the Haryana Chief Minister alleged that criminal activities had increased under the present state government and claimed that people were living under fear of extortion threats.

His remarks come as political parties begin intensifying preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

New Delhi: Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has said that not only does Nepal claim that India occupies some of its territory, but Nepal also holds control over certain areas claimed by India, urging both countries to resolve border issues through dialogue and factual assessment.

Addressing Parliament, Shah spoke about the long-standing boundary dispute involving the Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura regions, areas claimed by both Nepal and India. He said the two neighbouring countries had agreed to address the issue through discussions involving historians, survey experts and other specialists.

Shah informed lawmakers that Nepal had formally communicated its concerns to India through diplomatic channels and had received a response. He said both sides had expressed willingness to examine historical records and geographical evidence before seeking a mutually acceptable solution.

“Both countries should study the facts and sit together in a friendly manner to resolve the issue,” Shah said, adding that border disputes should be handled through dialogue rather than confrontation.

The Nepal Prime Minister also revealed that Kathmandu had held diplomatic discussions with China and the United Kingdom regarding the matter. He noted that Britain was consulted because of its historical role in the region during the colonial era.

The disputed areas lie near the tri-junction connecting India, Nepal and Tibet. India maintains that Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura are part of Uttarakhand and has consistently stated that the issue should be resolved through bilateral talks.

Shah’s remarks, particularly his assertion that Nepal occupies certain Indian territories, have sparked debate in Nepal. While some political observers viewed the comments as an attempt to encourage a balanced discussion on the dispute, several experts and social media users questioned the basis of the claim.

The border issue remains one of the most sensitive matters in India-Nepal relations, with both countries continuing diplomatic efforts to find a lasting resolution.
