15 killed, dozens injured in Nepal as protests erupt over social media ban

Kathmandu: At least 15 people were killed and dozens more injured in violent clashes between police and protesting youths in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and other areas after the government imposed a ban on social media platforms, police said on Sunday.

Authorities deployed the army in Kathmandu to control the situation after the demonstrations spiralled out of control. Thousands of youths, including school students under the banner of GEN-Z, gathered outside the parliament building and raised slogans demanding the immediate withdrawal of the ban.

The protests turned violent when some demonstrators attempted to enter parliament, prompting police to resort to baton charges, tear gas and rubber bullets.

Quoting hospital reports, a local newspaper said 14 of the deaths occurred in Kathmandu. The victims included six at Trauma Centre, three at Civil Hospital, three at Everest Hospital, one at Kathmandu Medical College and one at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

Police confirmed the overall death toll had reached 15.
