Tamil Nadu: At least 31 people, including two children, were killed and several others injured in a stampede during a rally of actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday.
According to reports, the crowd had swelled beyond control, leading to chaos and suffocation. Many attendees fainted, while others fell unconscious and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Witnesses said the situation worsened when people struggled to breathe in the packed gathering.
Vijay, who was addressing the rally, had to pause his speech as the situation deteriorated. The heavy turnout and lack of space reportedly triggered the deadly stampede.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy. “Deeply pained by the unfortunate incident that took place during a political rally in Karur. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. Praying for a quick recovery of the injured,” PM Modi said in a statement.
