Islamabad: At least 69 people were killed and 169 others injured in a powerful explosion during Friday prayers at an Imambargah in the Tarlai area of Islamabad, Pakistani media reported on Friday.
The blast occurred at Kasr-e-Khadijat-ul-Kubra Imambargah, with eyewitnesses saying the explosion took place near the main entrance of the religious site. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, including the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and the Polyclinic Hospital, where several are reported to be in critical condition. Hospital authorities said the exact number of casualties is still being verified.
Videos circulating on social media showed extensive damage to the building, shattered glass, and scenes of worshippers and local residents assisting the injured moments after the blast.
According to preliminary information, a suicide bomber attempted to enter the Imambargah but was stopped by security personnel. The attacker allegedly detonated the explosive device at the gate after being intercepted.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to determine the identity of the attacker and those behind the assault.
