New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have won one seat each in the ongoing assembly bypolls, while the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are leading in one seat each.
In Punjab, AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora emerged victorious from the Ludhiana West assembly seat, defeating Congress’ Bharat Bhushan Ashu by 10,637 votes. A total of 14 candidates contested the bypoll, which was necessitated after the death of sitting AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January this year.
In Gujarat, AAP’s Italia Gopal won the Visavadar seat by defeating BJP’s Kirit Patel with a margin of 17,554 votes. The seat fell vacant in December 2023 after then AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the BJP.
The BJP secured a win in Gujarat’s Kadi constituency, where Rajendra Chavda defeated Congress candidate Ramesh Chavda by a substantial margin of 39,452 votes. The seat, reserved for Scheduled Castes, was vacant following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki in February.
In West Bengal, TMC’s Alifa Ahmed is leading by 29,749 votes after 13 rounds of counting in the Kaliganj assembly seat in Nadia district. According to the Election Commission, Ahmed has secured 59,329 votes so far. Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Sheikh, supported by the CPI(M), is in the second position with 19,516 votes.
Meanwhile, in Kerala’s Nilambur seat, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is ahead of the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). After the final 19th round of counting, UDF’s Aryadan Shaukat is leading by 11,077 votes over CPI(M)’s M.K. Swaraj. Shaukat is the son of veteran Congress leader Aryadan Mohammed, while Swaraj is a senior CPI(M) functionary.
Independent candidate and two-time MLA P.V. Anwar also put up a strong performance in Nilambur, surprising both the UDF and LDF.
