Ludhiana: Six to seven armed assailants attacked the residence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sukhwinder Singh Chhinda in Lehra village in Ludhiana late Saturday night.
The attackers reportedly fired five to seven rounds at the main gate before storming into the house, where they threatened the family with dire consequences. They later set Chhinda’s car ablaze and fled under the cover of darkness.
Dehlon police have registered an FIR against the main accused, identified as Manak, and his accomplice. ACP Harjinder Singh Gill said a police team led by Dehlon SHO Sukhjinder Singh was conducting raids to trace the attackers. The incident took place around 11 pm.
While the motive is yet to be established, Chhinda, who also heads the Pohar Truck Union, alleged that the assault was meant to intimidate him for raising his voice against drug smugglers and their supporters after the formation of the AAP government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
Chhinda, a close aide of Gill MLA Jiwan Singh Sangowal, said he would continue his campaign against drugs despite the attack.
