AAP MP Malvinder Kang seeks mandatory medical, dope test for grooms before marriage

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party MP Malvinder Singh Kang on Friday raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, urging the Centre to make medical and dope tests mandatory for men before marriage.

Speaking during Zero Hour, Kang said that while women are often subjected to detailed scrutiny before marriage, there is no similar system in place for men. He proposed that a groom should be required to submit a medical report and proof of being drug-free before a marriage certificate is issued.

He appealed to the central government to enact a law in this regard and direct all states to implement it strictly.

Kang argued that rising cases of divorce and domestic violence are often linked to hidden health issues and substance abuse. He said many individuals conceal serious illnesses or addiction problems before marriage, leading to disputes later.

Highlighting the need for transparency, the MP said that while a bride’s qualifications and background are closely examined, there are no such parameters for grooms.

He added that making such disclosures mandatory would help safeguard women’s rights and promote healthier, more transparent marital relationships in society.
