New Delhi: A political controversy broke out on Monday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not attend the 350th martyrdom day celebrations of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji at Sri Anandpur Sahib. AAP state president and cabinet minister Aman Arora criticised the Prime Minister, alleging that his absence reflected “hatred towards Punjab and Sikhs”.
Arora said the Prime Minister should have been present at the historic occasion. He claimed that the absence showed a lack of respect for Punjab’s sentiments.
Responding to the remarks, BJP state president Sunil Jakhar countered that PM Modi has deep faith in Sikh gurus and tradition. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in Sikh gurus and tradition. He does not need a certificate from anyone,” Jakhar said. He added that the Prime Minister has taken the teachings of the Gurus across the world and cited the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor as an example.
Jakhar accused the AAP government of staging a “drama” by holding a special Assembly session in Sri Anandpur Sahib, alleging that crores of public money were wasted and that the move was politically motivated to divert attention from public scrutiny of government spending.
