AAP wins 2 of 5 assembly seats in bypolls; Congress, BJP, TMC bag one each

New Delhi: The counting of votes for the by-elections to five assembly seats across four states is underway, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerging as the biggest gainer by winning two seats. The Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Trinamool Congress (TMC) have secured one seat each.

According to the Election Commission, AAP’s Gopal Italia clinched victory from Gujarat’s Visavadar constituency, while Sanjeev Arora won from Ludhiana West in Punjab. The Ludhiana West bypoll was necessitated following the death of sitting AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi.

The BJP’s Rajendra Chavda won the Kadi seat in Gujarat, defeating Congress rival Ramesh Chavda. In Kerala’s Nilambur seat, the Congress managed to retain its stronghold, with its candidate defeating the CPI(M) nominee.

Meanwhile, in West Bengal, TMC’s Alifa Ahmed has taken a commanding lead over the BJP candidate in Kaliganj, with the final result expected soon.

The voter turnout for these bypolls varied across states. Kerala’s Nilambur registered the highest turnout at 75.27%, followed by 73.36% in West Bengal’s Kaliganj.

Gujarat’s Visavadar and Kadi constituencies recorded 56.89% and 57.91% turnout, respectively. Punjab’s Ludhiana West saw the lowest participation, with 51.33% voter turnout.
