AAP wins 63% seats in Punjab Zila Parishad elections, secures majority in 12 districts

Chandigarh: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged as the clear winner in the Zila Parishad elections in Punjab, securing 63 per cent of the seats, while the Congress finished a distant second with 18 per cent.

Polling was held on December 14 for 346 Zila Parishad zones across the state. The Khadoor Sahib zone did not go to polls due to the non-availability of nominations, while the Zila Parishad election in Mohali has been postponed. Out of the 346 zones, AAP won 218 zones and the Congress won 62 zones.

According to the final results declared by the State Election Commission, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won 46 zones, accounting for 13.29 per cent of the total seats. The BJP secured seven zones (2.02 per cent), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won three zones (0.86 per cent) and independents won 10 zones (2.89 per cent).

The Election Commission said that the final results of the panchayat samiti elections are yet to be declared. As per the consolidated outcome, AAP has won a clear majority in 12 of the 22 districts of Punjab, strengthening its grip on local governance in the state.
