Kolkata: Chaos erupted at Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday after spectators, who had paid hefty sums for tickets to see Argentine football icon Lionel Messi, protested over not getting a clear glimpse of the footballer. The situation led to allegations of large-scale mismanagement by the event organisers.
Satdaru Dutta, the chief organiser of the Lionel Messi event at Salt Lake Stadium, was detained by the police following complaints related to the chaos. West Bengal Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar confirmed the development.
According to the police, Dutta was detained at Kolkata airport when he had gone to drop Messi and his associates for their onward journey to Hyderabad. The action was taken in connection with the disorder allegedly caused due to poor arrangements at the stadium.
“We are looking into whether the arrangements were not adequate on the part of the organisers, which led to chaos in the stadium. He has been taken into custody and the police have now brought the situation under control,” the DGP said.
Several spectators alleged that despite paying high prices for tickets, they were unable to see Messi properly, triggering protests inside the stadium and forcing police intervention.
