Air India grounds Boeing 787-8 after pilot flags possible fuel control switch issue; DGCA informed

New Delhi: An Air India pilot on Monday flagged a possible malfunction in the ‘fuel control switch’ of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft after it landed in Bengaluru from London on flight AI132.

Following the report, Air India immediately grounded the aircraft as a precautionary measure and informed the aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The airline said the issue will now be investigated in coordination with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to determine the root cause.

The development has drawn attention due to its similarity with findings from a major Air India accident last year. On June 12, 2025, an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating from Ahmedabad to London crashed, killing 260 people on board. The preliminary investigation report into that crash revealed that the fuel supply to both engines was cut off shortly after take-off, with a gap of just one second between the two shutdowns.

According to cockpit voice recordings from the 2025 crash, there was confusion among the pilots over who had switched off the fuel supply. The fresh incident has once again raised questions about aircraft safety and the functioning of the fuel control switch on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Air India said further action will be taken based on the findings of the technical inspection, while the DGCA is monitoring the situation closely.
